Drawing from Nature - Spring

This term we are going to explore Drawing from Nature ‘in real life’, so I will be running this class live!

Come draw and paint with me on my Artist Residency at CERES in the beautiful garden surrounds of the community environment park by the Merri Creek. Discover what you can create and learn through observation and experimentation in these in depth but light hearted classes. When learning to draw the best approach is through observation of nature, so if that’s what you want to do, this class is perfect for you. Each week you I will give you a ‘live’ lesson and demonstration on topics such as how to draw structure, proportion, the rules of nature, colour, tone and more. Following this we will go out into the grounds of CERES and draw our chosen subjects and environments, which range from the veggie gardens, pocket bushland, informal and semi-formal gardens, flower beds and even an olive grove! We will be drawing and painting in dry and wet media subjects such as – gum leaves, flowers, trees, plant structure, moving water, clouds, birds and anything else around us! Working together and independently and gathering to learn, chat and reflect before and afterwards. Materials include pencil, pastel. watercolour, gouache and more on cartridge and watercolour paper. BYO materials, clothing and equipment for art making outdoors.

Katie Roberts Art_Buddah and

About Katie Roberts, Artist and Teacher

Welcome, so glad to see you here.

I am a professional artist with a passion for sharing my knowledge in a fun and informative way. I believe everyone can learn to draw. I studied art for ten years, I have a Masters of Fine Art and have been supporting artists for nearly two decades.  I have been running my own classes since for nearly ten years and teach drawing at university in Melbourne as well.

I am a Melbourne based artist who makes large-scale drawings, mixed media works, oil paintings and multi-sensory installations.I have been tutoring and mentoring artists for the last 15 years. I started running art classes at Span Community House in Thornbury in 2011.

I genuinely believe that anyone can learn to draw and that the basic techniques are a skill set like reading and writing.

I have an encouraging and friendly approach. I teach in a fun, challenging and experimental way, while imparting a strong knowledge of traditional techniques and skills as well.

I hold a Masters of Fine Art and a Honours Degree in Fine Art majoring in Drawing from RMIT where I studied under renowned drawing teacher Godwin Bradbeer. I have been life drawing for 25 years. I have held 15 solo exhibitions, and my artwork in held in many private collections.

I work from my studio at home in leafy Melbourne Australia.
