Drawing from Nature - Summer

'Drawing from Nature' – Summer – Outdoors at CERES

This term I am taking my iconic course - Drawing from Nature – outside where it belongs!

In this dynamic and deep class we explore the season, nature, and tap into our creative nature. What will we learn in the wild!? This 6 week course will give you the chance to explore the interplay between nature and your art practice. We will explore the grounds of CERES in Summer, working outdoors, while literally be drawing from nature using various media. Including foraging for art materials and experimenting with natural processes, we will also be using traditional charcoal, pencil, pastel, watercolour, gouache, ink and more! This course is unique in its content and approach, a deep dive into art! We will look at exciting examples from contemporary and historical art while Artist in Residence (your tutor) Katie Roberts will share insights into her artistic process and demonstrate ways to deeply connect with the land. Each session will be inspired by a natural process, medium, subject and seasonal topic, such as making art using fire, water and earth, conveying the feeling of place, not just depitching it.

These very special classes offer you rich opportunities to experiment with various techniques, and natural processes as well as learn important drawing skills and traditional techniques. Each class is taught outdoors and lasts a generous 2.5 hours including theory, demonstration and practice. This class is best suited to those with some experience and a willingness to experiment!

About Katie Roberts, Artist and Teacher

Welcome, so glad to see you here.

I am a professional artist with a passion for sharing my knowledge in a fun and informative way. I believe everyone can learn to draw. I studied art for ten years, I have a Masters of Fine Art and have been supporting artists for nearly two decades.  I have been running my own classes since for nearly ten years and teach drawing at university in Melbourne as well.

I am a Melbourne based artist who makes large-scale drawings, mixed media works, oil paintings and multi-sensory installations.I have been tutoring and mentoring artists for the last 15 years. I started running art classes at Span Community House in Thornbury in 2011.

I genuinely believe that anyone can learn to draw and that the basic techniques are a skill set like reading and writing.

I have an encouraging and friendly approach. I teach in a fun, challenging and experimental way, while imparting a strong knowledge of traditional techniques and skills as well.

I hold a Masters of Fine Art and a Honours Degree in Fine Art majoring in Drawing from RMIT where I studied under renowned drawing teacher Godwin Bradbeer. I have been life drawing for 25 years. I have held 15 solo exhibitions, and my artwork in held in many private collections.

I work from my studio at home in leafy Melbourne Australia.
