Artistic Development

Artistic Development is a small, friendly, in-depth art class for people who want to deepen their knowledge and nurture a more creative life. This year students will focus on their own projects – from drawing portraits, to watercolour and landscape - I will teach a range of skills and respond to questions, from proportions of the face, body, drawing trees, flowers, landscape etc. Working on various media depending on interest. You will need to supply your own materials, and work on projects at home too. Beginners to advanced welcome.

Dip into Drawing

Join in this fun little class - where you get to dip into drawing in a relaxed environment, make some art and learn some new skills. Through this class you will establish a journal practice and begin to draw from observation and nature. We will be in the wonderful community garden at Span so there will be lots of plants, fruit, veg and flowers to draw from! A small class in which I will draw with you and we all learn from each other. Suiting students at any level but some experience will be of benefit. A covid safe class in which we will be drawing outside (weather permitting). Limited to 6 students only. BYO materials

Wild Watercolour 

Dive into watercolour, splash around and explore! This session you will get to explore the wild side of watercolour and your own artistic nature. These sessions are based outdoors and involve splashing and dripping and other less-conventional, messy yet wonderful watercolour techniques. Suiting beginners to intermediate, or anyone! This is a covid safe class in which we will be working outside (weather permitting). Limited to 6 students. BYO materials. 

Dates: April 28 - May 26 (5 Weeks) 

Time - Wednesdays 3 - 4.30

About Katie Roberts, Artist and Teacher 

Welcome, so glad to see you here. 

I am a professional artist with a passion for sharing my knowledge in a fun and informative way. I believe everyone can learn to draw. I studied art for ten years, I have a Masters of Fine Art and have been supporting artists for nearly two decades.  I have been running my own classes since for nearly ten years and teach drawing at university in Melbourne as well.  


I am a Melbourne based artist who makes large-scale drawings, mixed media works, oil paintings and multi-sensory installations.I have been tutoring and mentoring artists for the last 15 years. I started running art classes at Span Community House in Thornbury in 2011.


I genuinely believe that anyone can learn to draw and that the basic techniques are a skill set like reading and writing.

I have an encouraging and friendly approach. I teach in a fun, challenging and experimental way, while imparting a strong knowledge of traditional techniques and skills as well.

I hold a Masters of Fine Art and a Honours Degree in Fine Art majoring in Drawing from RMIT where I studied under renowned drawing teacher Godwin Bradbeer. I have been life drawing for 25 years. I have held 15 solo exhibitions, and my artwork in held in many private collections.

I work from my studio at home in leafy Melbourne Australia.
